A Cold Weather Castle
Although we are still open for two more weeks, things are winding down for the season as we see the masons putting a “top coat” on the walls to protect it from the cold weather. Many people are unaware that the castle wall construction must halt when the temperatures start to fall. One of the key ingredients in the mortar, the lime, will not set up in cold temperatures. Also seen around the fortress are brush piles being gathered and stacked for wildlife habitats, fleece coats returning to the sheep (and workers!) and warm inviting fires at every station. Here we see the marigold flowers being separated into seeds and dye stuffs for next spring. There is certainly a lot to do to prepare a castle for the winter, but much work is still ahead of us as we plan for new and exciting activities for the new year! A working Trebuchet with an 80 foot pole arm, a new sheep family and much growth on the castle are all a part of our continuing commitment to make the Ozark Medieval Fortress one of the most memorable trips of a lifetime.
