There is always an aura of romance that surrounds castles and for us here at OMF we are thrilled to have been the site for a wedding or two last year.
It wouldn’t surprise us to learn that we have been the destination for a few honeymooners as well, but this week we had a rare treat. Newlyweds Jeremiah and Michaela Harrison of Locust Grove, Oklahoma stopped by late one day and experienced only a short visit to the castle site before closing.
Dismayed that they had not been able to see the entire village, they returned the next day and spent several more hours. But that is not the “rare” part of this tale… they both came back on a THIRD day in a row and volunteered as an illuminator and a potter!! That’s right.
These two were on their honeymoon and fell in love not only with each other but with our castle as well! Both are very interested in religious architecture and recently moved to Locust Grove to be near a monastery being built there.
Michaela was also an enthusiast of the early Catholic tradition of book illumination and shared her beautifully drawn wedding favors with the current castle illuminator. It didn’t take long to realize that these two would be a wonderful asset to the visitors of the castle so after a long chat over pizza (Jeremiah saved the last piece for Michaela!), both were ready to become villagers from the 13th century.
They did an outstanding job and have promised to come back a few more times to live the castle life with us. One of the nicest things about finding this special new couple is that in some ways the castle, too, is on it’s honeymoon.
We are beginning a lifetime of adventure and anticipating our medieval family to grow over the next 20 years. How exciting it will be to watch their family grow right along with the castle.
