Are You Illuminated?

What does illumination mean to you? Does it mean “lit up” as in “The candle illuminated the room”? Or maybe to you it means enlightened, or given knowledge. Well, in Medieval Times, Illuminations had a different meaning. Back then hand-printed manuscipts were highlighted or decorated in gold or siler leaf and often also painted in bright colors so there seemed to be a light within (hence “illumination”). These decorations were often the first word on the page or in the borders of the writing or maybe even miniature illustrations. Illuminations were done by monks all over Europe. Later, illuminators were craftsmen who either set up shop in a city or were itinerant, traveling from place to place looking for work. Not so for the Illuminator at the Ozark Medieval Fortress! Catherine sees regular duty as an illuminator, delighting our guests with book marks with their names or showing off her artistic abilities on signs and cards. No traveling from place to place for her!
