Hey, hey, hey, winter is over!

«Our crazy undertakings, it is said, are the only things that we will never regret doing».

Our newbuild attraction with a twist, is slowly taking shape.
The castle has already grown to a height of three feet.
Ground was broken last fall.

Ozark Medieval Fortress will officially open on May 1, 2010.

Remember that the construction phase of the project would last twenty years!

Our team of masons, carpenters and blacksmith will be back to work from March 1.
Honey, our horse too!
Honey will be soon hauling stones and pulling logs!

Tap tap tap

We will start hearing again the tap tap tap, tap tap tap of mallet on chisel. The thump thump ting of a blacksmith’s hammer, bashing red-hot iron on an anvil.
Rocks will be split, basket of mortar hauled up the walls, there will be human activity taking place around the stumps of some castle walls, but here is no ruin.

Piece by piece, slowly, a completly new castle is rising.

The 13th century is a time period that intrigues us incessantly.

It is not yet the Renaissance, the Black Plague or Hundred Years War have not arrived, it is not the “Dark Ages”, it is the time of Louis IX, when medieval construction was at its peak!

Castle were first for defense but also for prestige. But, without that feudal history occurring here on North American soil, we are not naturally privy to the how’s and why’s of medieval construction.

We don’t see gothic arches when we walk down the street, arrow slits still existing in the walls we pass on a daily basis. We don’t usually find ourselves asking what techniques were used to stabilize a 45 foot tower.

Dissection of a castle

We do, however, dream of castles. For the first time on American soil, we will be able to dissect Medieval architecture in a fun way, ask how and why certain architectural techniques came about.

Imagine determining why the walls were so thick by actually lancing a stone 150 feet in the air with a real catapult!! Then we understand!

Catapults and carpenters.

Pascal Waringo, Compagnon du Devoir, with a team of skilled carpenters is going to start to put together a catapult, next week at Ozark Medieval Fortress for educational purpose.

Hopefully, in 2011, we will set a battlefield with real trebuchet, catapult, ballista, and many other war machines.

Ozark Medieval Fortress wants you!
