Le Trebuchet

Did you know that trebuchets were used in the 1100s all the way through the 16th Century? Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about trebuchets: “The counterweight trebuchet appeared in both Christian and Muslim lands around the Mediterranean in the twelfth century. It could fling projectiles of up to three hundred pounds (140 kg) at high speeds into enemy fortifications. Occasionally, disease-infected corpses were flung into cities in an attempt to infect and terrorize the people under siege, a medieval form of biological warfare.

The trebuchet did not become obsolete until the 16th century, well after the introduction of gunpowder. Trebuchets were far more accurate than other medieval catapults.”

Here at the Ozark Medieval Fortress, we won’t be tossing any corpses, disease-infected or otherwise, but visitors will enjoy trying our toy trebuchets and launching sponge balls with them. Jean Marc, one of our Founding Partners, made these for our guests to play with. Three are up and running in our gathering room and several will be available soon on the Forest Trail in our new games area.

I’ll keep you informed on other games as the area nears completion.
