The past two months at the fortress have seemed more like recess than work as hundreds of students are discovering our medieval “edutraction”. The students, some of them traveling up to three hours one way, have taken advantage of numerous activities offered to schools ranging from stone carving and wool bracelet making to walking the trail with our unique and well received “Footsteps through the Fortress” tour.
Footsteps through the Fortress is a sensory exploration complete with tokens to take home that will remind students of the smell of the motte and bailey fort, the sound of the blacksmith’s anvil as they hammer metal, and the feel of the clay, wool, willow and jute used by our artisans. After a recent Footsteps tour, the students of Mrs. Pratt wrote thank you notes that we have placed on the gathering room wall to be seen by our visitors. It’s actions like these that verify for us the special magic that can be found here at the Ozark Medieval Fortress.
