The 20-Year Roofing Plan
The tiles of a castle roof must last for hundreds of years so what’s an artisan to do? Castle potter Mitch has solved the problem! Even though it is many years before the tiles of the castle roof will begin to be made and actually placed on the towers, Mitch has been working on the roof since year one. The beginning of the season saw Mitch making bricks (with the enthusiastic assistance of some of our barefooted visitors!) that would be used to construct the kiln. Now, at the end of the season, the kiln is operational and samples of the tile roof are being tested on site. Since the roof will be responsible for keeping all the water out of the castle, it is extremely important that the tiles can stand up to the wind, rain, ice, and snow of the Arkansas climate. The samples pictured here are being left on site exposed to the elements to determine if the design, clay and the kiln firing temperature are suitable to make the roof. With something as vital to the protection of our castle as the knights were, every detail needs to be checked. Thankfully Mitch has this well underway. And by the way, if you think 20 years is too early to start testing the tiles then consider this… it is estimated that it will take 10 years just to make enough tiles for the roof not including the time it will take to install them. In a modern era where the average life span of a roof is 20 years, this 20 year production is truly a unique adventure!
