Falconry & Siege Engine Demonstrations

Saturday April 30, 2011

There is nothing so beautiful as a bird in flight, unless that bird is a trained medieval hunter. It is then that the beauty becomes perfection. Using the techniques of the Middle Ages, licensed falconer Dr. Richard Swinney will return Saturday, April 30th to the Ozark Medieval Fortress to share this experience with visitors to the castle. Weather permitting, Dr. Swinney will conduct free flight demonstrations with his Red Tailed Hawk, and be available to answer questions about this ancient technique. Throughout the Middle Ages birds of prey were trained to assist man in hunting small game and this is an excellent opportunity to see this rarely performed skill.

The times for the demonstrations will be determined by the weather conditions but will take place during the castle hours of 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Also presenting that day will be Dr. Swinney’s son Matthew as he takes visitors on a fun “medieval physics” display using models of siege weapons popular during the Middle Ages. On display will be a small collection of functioning models which include the trebuchet, catapult, ballista and siege tower.

In addition, weapons and armor from this time period will be available to view.

This event is the second of many more unique opportunities offered by the Ozark Medieval Fortress in Lead Hill, Arkansas. In addition to these events on April 30, most holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, will have several fun and unique activities to entertain the castle goers.
